False Cards: Volume 2

False Cards by Henry Hawley Smart is a Victorian sensation novel of love, loyalty, and social peril. The action centers on Reginald Holbourne, Lettice Cheslett, and Marion Langworthy, whose intertwined loves and ambitions expose the fragility of reputation in London and the countryside. Reginald, swept by passion for Lettice despite a formal engagement to Marion, becomes entangled in a tangle of schemes as Marion plots to ruin rivals, pry into Lettice’s past, and secure her own advantage. Amid the manor-house intrigues of Aldringham and Grace Holbourne’s quiet virtue, letters, clandestine visits, and rumours of secret marriages push the characters toward betrayals and high-stakes choices. Lettice, loyal and idealistic, accepts hardship to protect Reginald's prospects, ultimately choosing exile when slander threatens to ruin both. Reginald, torn by passion and family duty, returns from abroad to find Lettice vanished and a tangle of secrets awaiting him. The narrative mixes romance, intrigue, and social satire, offering a compelling portrait of Victorian manners, class anxieties, and the price of love in a world governed by reputation.
