The Familiar Route: Commutes, Habits, Maps and Why We Stop Seeing Places We Know Well

How much of the world do we stop seeing simply because we know it so well?

Think about the route you take to work, the streets surrounding your home or the journey you have made hundreds of times. You know where to turn, which landmarks to expect and how long the journey should take. Yet how much of what you pass do you actually notice?

The Familiar Route explores the fascinating psychology of everyday journeys and the curious ways repetition changes our relationship with the places around us.

Drawing on research into attention, memory, habits and spatial navigation, Sky Adler examines why familiar journeys blur together, how our minds build maps of the world, why visitors notice things residents overlook and how ordinary streets become connected with our memories and identities.

From travelling on autopilot to the strange experience of taking an unfamiliar road home, this accessible and thought-provoking book reveals how familiarity makes everyday life easier while quietly changing what we see, remember and understand.

The places we know best may still have the most to teach us about how our minds work.
