The legacy of a ranch is measured in more than just acres. It is measured in generations.
For many ranching families, the greatest challenge isn’t the drought, the markets, or the hard winters; it’s the daunting task of passing the reins to the next generation. Succession is a complex trail to navigate, filled with emotional brush, financial potholes, and the heavy weight of family history. Without a clear map, even the most storied operations can falter.
The Families In Ranching Succession Toolkit (FIRST) is designed to be that map. Experts across Texas Tech University have brought together leading voices in agricultural law, family dynamics, and financial planning. Together, they provide a comprehensive, step-by-step framework for families ready to secure their future. Inside this toolkit, you will find expert guidance on:
- Navigating family dynamics: Understanding the unique overlap of business and bloodline.
- Clear communication: Tools for discussing legacies and setting shared goals before conflict arises.
- The hard numbers: Practical advice on budgeting, estate planning, and the complexities of taxation.
- Conflict mediation: Strategies for resolving "unseen" tensions that can derail a transition.
- The road map: Concrete milestones and templates for hosting productive family meetings.
Don’t leave the future of your land to chance. Whether you are the patriarch looking to retire or the next generation ready to step up, FIRST provides the tools needed to brand your legacy for the long haul.
Secure the land. Support the family. Sustain the brand.
