The family remains at the emotional heart of society, and makes up a significant proportion of the tourism market. However, the concept of family has changed over the decades and there are now different types of families that have their own unique attributes and needs. Families may have one parent or two, who may or may not be of different genders. Heike A. Schänzel is Associate Professor and Programme Leader Postgraduate in International Tourism Management at Auckland University of Technology, New Zealand. Her research interests include tourist behaviour, families in tourism, sociality in tourism and gender issues.

Ian Yeoman is Professor of Disruption, Innovation and New Phenomena, NHL Stenden University of Applied Sciences, the Netherlands.

Elisa Backer is Associate Professor at Federation University Australia and is on the editorial board of nine journals. Her main research interests are VFR travel, destination marketing, partial industrialisation in tourism, family tourism and social media.
