About this Item
Phillips, S. Famous Cases of Circumstantial Evidence With an Introduction on the Theory of Presumptive Proof. New York, J. Cockcroft, 1873. xxxix, 153 pp. Cloth with gilt stamped spine and front cover. Good. $25. * In case after case, actual situations are presented in which presumed malefactors were convicted on circumstantial evidence and later shown to be innocent. In his essay, Phillipps warns against jumping to conclusions, especially when capital punishment is a possibility. A capital crime, he finds, is often pinned on "the needy and unfortunate," and he proceeds to outline circumstances that appear to have changed little from his day to ours. The "general and fixed rules" he proposes "for the discovery of Truth" merit study as well. Seller Inventory # 78884
