The personal copy of Sir John Alexander Macdonald, the First Prime Minister of Canada, SIGNED AND INSCRIBED by him at front end page -"John A. Macdonald from his friend - 1846" and with his personal book plate at front paste down. Below Macdonald's signature in a faint hand "Valeria G. Burroughs 1846". The book is Very Good, loss of 3/8" cloth at head of spine, 1/4" loss at base of spine, toning, Preliminary Notice page loose and laid in, rear blank mostly missing, and 2" tear to cloth at top edge rear cover. John Alexander MacDonald (Jan. 11, 1815 -June 6, 1891) was Canada's First Prime Minister, serving from 1867 to 1873 and again from 1878 until his death in 1891. Considered the dominant figure of the Canadian Confederation, he aided in completing the Pacific railway and in his later years he dealt with the North-West rebellion. In the year this book was signed, the then 31 year old Macdonald was practicing law in Kingston, along with his partner, Alexander Campbell. While their legal partnership dissolved in 1849, Macdonald and Campbell would be linked politically the rest of their careers, both becoming Founding Fathers of the Canadian Confederation.
