About this Item
Hall, Gertrude. Far From Today. Boston: Roberts Brothers, 1894. Third edition. 12mo, pp. [1-2] [1-9] 10-291 [292: blank] [293-298: publisher's ads]. Original very light green cloth, front and spine panels stamped in brown. Old ownership signature on front free endpaper, a fine copy. #3364. $45. Collection of six short stories with vaguely medieval settings, generally treating the theme of thwarted love in a style that minutely analyzes the state of mind of her characters. This produces an uneasy mix of William Morris and Henry James. "Tristiane" concerns a female mind-reader. This seems to be scarcer than her two subsequent collections, Foam of the Sea (1895) and The Hundred (1898). The author was well-regarded critically in her time, receiving praise from Harriet Prescott Spofford and Louise Chandler Moulton, among others. Wright (III) 734. Seller Inventory # 3364
