It was Barrie's last work of prose fiction, and the first piece after thirty years of writing mostly plays following his great success with Peter Pan. Taking the form of a diary by a young minister in a small snowed-in village in the 1860's, it is an intriguing story that involves the supernatural, psychology, sexuality, and history. The narrator comes from Scotland, like Barrie, and uses many Scots phrases.
