A version of this novella first appeared as a free supplement to the London Times on Christmas Eve 1931. It was Barrie's last work of prose fiction, and the first piece after thirty years of writing mostly plays following his great success with Peter Pan. Taking the form of a diary by a young minister in a small snowed-in village in the 1860's, it is an intriguing story that involves the supernatural, psychology, sexuality, and history. The narrator comes from Scotland, like Barrie, and uses many Scots phrases. From the New York Times review of November 1932: This is no straightforward ghost story, but something far more weird and inexplicable, told with such skill as to make the reader's hair stand on end, and told also with a sense of quiet beauty. There is a kind of gentle humor drawn from the character of the young minister, though the author is at his best when making us laugh with his hero." 103 pages. 7 1/2 x 5 1/4 x 5/8.
