- Book 2 of 3: Modern Backend Engineering with FastAPI
Building APIs is only the beginning. As applications grow, backend systems become harder to maintain, optimise, and evolve. Database performance begins to matter. Business logic spreads across the codebase. Small architectural shortcuts become long-term technical debt.
FastAPI in Practice: Database Engineering and Scalable Backend Architecture is written for developers who already understand the fundamentals of FastAPI and are ready to build backend systems with stronger structure, better persistence design, and more scalable engineering habits.
This book takes you beyond simple CRUD tutorials and guides you through the design and evolution of ScaleCore, a production-oriented FastAPI backend platform built to simulate the kinds of systems used in SaaS products, internal business platforms, and scalable API-driven applications.
Instead of teaching isolated framework features, this volume focuses on how backend systems are designed, organised, optimised, and maintained as they grow.
You will learn how to:
Move from basic API development into scalable backend engineering.
Design layered FastAPI architectures using routers, services, repositories, schemas, and models.
Model complex database relationships with SQLAlchemy.
Manage schema evolution professionally with Alembic migrations.
Optimise ORM queries and avoid N+1 performance problems.
Apply indexing strategies for database performance.
Build asynchronous database workflows with SQLAlchemy.
Use repository and service layer patterns to keep business logic maintainable.
Design modular FastAPI applications that can grow without collapsing into confusion.
Manage transactions, data integrity, and partial failure scenarios.
Introduce Redis caching and performance-aware backend workflows.
Understand concurrency, background tasks, and scalable request processing.
Structure configuration for multiple environments.
Improve debugging, logging, traceability, and operational maintainability.
Review and evolve a backend platform for long-term scalability.
This book is especially suitable for developers who can already build FastAPI applications but want to understand what separates a working API from a maintainable backend system.
You should already be comfortable with basic FastAPI routing, request validation, CRUD workflows, foundational SQLAlchemy usage, authentication basics, and modular application structure. If you are completely new to FastAPI, begin with FastAPI for Beginners: Building Production-Ready Python APIs from Scratch before reading this volume.
This is not a beginner syntax book. It is a practical backend engineering book for developers who want to think more clearly about architecture, persistence, scalability, maintainability, and production-oriented design.
By the end of this book, you will not only know how to build APIs with FastAPI. You will understand how to engineer backend systems that are structured for growth, designed for maintainability, and prepared for long-term production use.
If you are ready to move from FastAPI basics into serious backend engineering, this book is your next step.

Store description
**Please note our transit times are from the date of dispatch.** We first started out as “The Paperback Exchange,” a chain of physical bookstores where we would part exchange your beloved books for new stories to transport you to faraway places. However, as shopping started to evolve to online shops and marketplaces, we bid our stores goodbye to become “PBShop.” This transition has only allowed us to blossom as we now ship thousands of titles to book lovers across the globe. We pride ourselves in being a community of local book lovers which allows our passion and devotion to shine in everything we do. In 2020 we not only celebrated our 20th birthday but our 1st birthday as being completely employee owned after becoming an E.O.T in September 2019. We are proud to be different and embrace standing apart on a book mountain by working from a virtual inventory which allows us to provide thousands of books that may be difficult to get for your bookshelf or your studies. Working with a number of different suppliers allows us to explore other avenues such as puzzles, sheet music and even stationery so we really do have something for everyone. Life is about being versatile in all realms of existence. If this is your first purchase with us, or you are a returning customer, we would like to welcome you to the PBShop family, for there is no friend as loyal as a book. We are a company who put our customers at the centre of everything we do as we understand the importance of reading because once you learn to read, you will forever be free. There are a whole lot of things in this world of ours that we are yet to explore, which is why we will forever inspire curious minds.…
