Fasting For Beginners: A Practical Orthodox Guide

Fasting doesn't have to be complicated—or miserable.

If you're new to Orthodox Christianity, or if you've been avoiding fasting because it seems overwhelming, this book is for you. Fasting for Beginners cuts through the confusion and offers straightforward, compassionate guidance on one of the Church's oldest spiritual practices.

Written for real people navigating modern challenges—demanding jobs, unsupportive family members, health conditions, tight budgets—this guide acknowledges the obstacles you face while showing you how to start small and build sustainable habits. You'll learn what Orthodox fasting actually is (and what it isn't), how to navigate the fasting calendar, what to eat and what to avoid, and how to handle the inevitable setbacks without guilt or shame.

Inside, you'll discover:

How to start with a single meal per week and gradually build your practice, rather than burning out by diving in headfirst. Practical strategies for fasting while managing work schedules, social obligations, and family dynamics. Clear explanations of Great Lent, Holy Week, and the other fasting seasons—what to expect and how to prepare. Real solutions for common obstacles: eating disorders, medications, pregnancy and breastfeeding, poverty, and more. Why fasting extends beyond food to include media, spending, criticism, and other areas of life. How to approach the Eucharistic fast with reverence and flexibility. Honest answers to questions nobody wants to ask about coffee, vitamins, shellfish, and breaking the fast.

This isn't a rule book—it's a roadmap. Fasting is about spiritual formation, not perfect performance. It's about learning self-control, creating space for God, and discovering freedom from compulsion. With warmth, wisdom, and pastoral sensitivity, Fasting for Beginners shows you how to make this ancient practice work in your contemporary life.

Whether you're preparing for your first Great Lent or you've been struggling with fasting for years, this book meets you where you are and gives you the tools to move forward. Includes sample meal plans, fasting-friendly recipes, and a comprehensive fasting calendar reference.
