The Fatal Marksman (Fantasy and Horror Classics)

From the heart of German Romanticism and the celebrated Gespensterbuch (Ghost Book) comes one of the most significant and chilling tales of diabolic bargains and inescapable fate, penned by Johann August Apel.

The Fatal Marksman (Der Freischutz) plunges into a desperate world where love and skill are not enough to secure happiness. A forester's apprentice is bound by tradition to win a shooting contest to claim his beloved bride. Failing repeatedly, he succumbs to desperation and makes a terrifying pact with a sinister figure to obtain seven magic bullets. Six bullets will strike true; the seventh, however, is controlled by a far darker power. Apel weaves a masterpiece of dread and suspense as the consequences of the supernatural bargain escalate, driving the protagonist toward a shattering, inevitable doom.

This story is a foundational work of Gothic horror, directly inspiring Carl Maria von Weber's renowned opera. It is essential reading for fans of German folklore, romantic fatalism, and classic tales of the Devil's debt.
