The Fatal Pool

Nice condition copy of "THE FATAL POOL" by John Rhode with its original dust jacket. 1961; Dodd, Mead & Company; New York. From the "Red Badge Detective" series. The book is a classic "closed-circle" detective novel in Rhode's Dr. Lancelot Priestley series. Family and friends have gathered at Framby Hall, the estate of Colonel Gayton. During breakfast, a young guest named Yvonne Bardwell—notorious for breaking off engagements—is discovered drowned in the estate's ornamental pool. Bruises on her shoulders show that she was forcibly held underwater. The central puzzle is an alibi dilemma: nearly the entire household was eating breakfast together at the time, leaving it a mystery how any of them could have slipped away unnoticed to commit the murder. Superintendent Jimmy Waghorn of Scotland Yard handles the case on the ground, while the brilliant armchair detective Dr. Lancelot Priestley provides analytical insight to unravel the hidden motives and tangled relationships among the house guests.
