Synopsis

My father, Maxwell Perkins, became a distinguished editor, and is now sometimes referred to as legendary. He grew up in Plainfield, New Jersey, and in the summers, in Windsor, Vermont. His grandfather, William Maxwell Evarts, who had twelve children, had bought six houses in a row down Main Street in Windsor, and many acres of land and woods behind them. There was a large pond and the woods called "Paradise" by the family, and on the other side of the Connecticut River. Cornish, New Hampshire, where Augustus St. Gaudens lived and worked along with many other creative artists.
