Synopsis

This volume, the fifth in a series to publish all 180 letters by the monk Peter Damian, presents Letters 121-150 which were written between 1065 and 1071. The correspondence includes letters to the Empress Agness, to lay officials and nobles, to monastic communities and to his nephew. In all of these letters, Peter deplores the excesses of the church, particularly clerical marriage, and stresses the need for reform, exhorting the qualities of a celibate, contemplative monastic life. Each translation is preceded by a brief summary.

About the Author

Owen J. Blum, O.F.M., (1912-98) published frequently on Peter Damian and assisted in the critical edition of the Letters published in the series Monumenta Germaniae Historica. He was Professor Emeritus of History at Quincy University. Irven M. Resnick is Professor of Philosophy and Religion, and Chair of Excellence in Judaic Studies, at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.
