One-of-a-kind faux book box, with plush interior. Exterior front looks like five calf-bound classic volumes -- "Donne's Works", Poets and Poetry of Scotland", "Canterbury Tales", "Works of Shakespeare", and "The Faerie Queene". These matching "spines" have raised bands and gilt decoration, comprised of simple floral devices in the compartments and narrow gilt borders to the raised bands. One opens the box by removing the upper part of the center volume or panel. Inside is green velvet and three wells, which might have been intended for small glass bottles. The sides of the box are of red calf that resembles fancy leather desk tops. The top of the volumes have paper pastedown. The box measures 31.5 in width, 25.5 cm in height, and 17.5 cm in depth. It was surely made on a custom basis, and it exudes a refined elegance. Condition: small abrasions and/or rubbing marks. Title labels renewed. Paper pastedown above with some rippling.
