Fever of Unknown Origin: A True Tale of Medicine, Mystery, and Magic

In the summer of 1990, Judith Ford's body turned against her, and no one could tell her why.

She was forty two. A psychotherapist with a full practice, a new marriage, three children, and a life built on motion, running, dancing, and yoga. Then came the fevers that would not break, the itching that never stopped, and the eyes that burned in the light. Within days she was in a hospital bed, and the doctors around her had no name for what was happening to her. A name would not arrive for seven more years.

Fever of Unknown Origin is the true story of that summer, and everything that grew out of it. Judith Ford writes with the precision of a clinician and the nerve of a poet, moving between the language of Western medicine and the older, stranger language of shamanic healing she turned to when medicine ran out of answers. Years later, she would sit with both of her parents through their own final illnesses, carrying with her everything that hospital summer had taught her about hope, surrender, and the long shadow of simply not knowing.

This is a memoir for anyone who has waited on a diagnosis that would not come. For anyone who has sat in a hospital room and wondered if hope is still allowed. For anyone caring for an aging parent and wondering how to do it with grace. Readers of Joan Didion and readers of Atul Gawande will recognize a kindred voice here, one that refuses to look away and refuses to offer easy comfort in its place.
