A Few Cursory Observations in Reply to the Strictures of the Rev. Mr. Gilchrist in His Rational Grammar

A Few Cursory Observations In Reply To The Strictures Of The Rev. Mr. Gilchrist In His Rational Grammar by Alexander Crombie. This 1817 pamphlet is a scholarly reply to Gilchrist's Rational Grammar, defending traditional English grammar, etymology, and syntax. Crombie engages with issues such as the origins of English possession, the role of prepositions and conjunctions, and the relationship between usage and grammatical rules. He critiques the ideas of Harris and Tooke, argues that synonyms are rarely exact, and contends that etymology cannot alone determine meaning or the accessory ideas attached to words. The work emphasizes the necessity of classification and inductive reasoning in grammar, and defends the authority of usage alongside reason in guiding language. It is a polemical yet methodical defense of philology, illustrating the complexities of English language study during the period.
