Fiddy Scraggs; Or, a Clumsy Foot May Step True

"Fiddy Scraggs; Or, A Clumsy Foot May Step True" by Anna Jane Buckland follows Philadelphia Scraggs, a poor, hard-working girl nicknamed 'Fiddy,' who grows up among a wandering family of laborers. Raised in poverty and subjected to mendicancy and deceit, Fiddy’s life changes when a benevolent lodger, Mrs. Seldon, offers education and Christian guidance. Through regular reading lessons and Bible stories, Fiddy encounters a faith that helps her discern right from wrong and inspires her to live with honesty and diligence. As she learns to read, stitch, and serve in a refined London household, she faces temptations and suspicions that threaten her integrity, especially when a theft at Banksier House jeopardizes her reputation. The story culminates in a dramatic act of courage when Fiddy saves her mistress from a fire, prompting forgiveness and a fresh start for her family. In the end, Mrs. Seldon’s influence and Fiddy’s steadfast faith help her parents reform and settle into a life of honest labor and Christian trust.
