PreSchool-Grade 2-An attractive but bland nonfiction entry. A first-person narration gives a simple introduction to horse behavior, gaits, anatomy, and coloring. Additional tidbits of information appear on some pages in smaller type. Children will enjoy Lilly's lovely watercolors, but even the youngest will want to know more about these majestic creatures than is presented here.

Ages 4-7. With its simple text and pencil-and-watercolor illustrations set against ample white space, this is the horse book librarians have been looking for. The first-person narrative is lyrical and immediate, presenting the behavior, appearance, anatomy, offspring, and movements of a wide variety of breeds. Shown in a natural setting within the body of the text, the animals are pictured in neat rows on the endpapers. While Lilly's attractive drawings have simple forms (his usual detailing is absent), his renderings are solid and anatomically correct, with black outlines that invite tracing. As in other entries in the lauded Read and Wonder series, the numerous captions provide additional information; here, it's about food, grooming, and gender. No horsefeathers, this is a surefire bet for young equestrians. Julie Corsaro
