About the book >.>.> I make no claims to be an authority on Javan birds and this book con- tains little information that is new or original. Rather it was written to meet a serious and pressing need, for there is as yet no convenient handbook for the birds of this very important region which is inhabited by 95 million people and visited by several million international visitors each year. During my time in Indonesia, working with FAO and the Directorate- General of Nature Conservation (PHPA) to plan a complete system of nature reserves for the archipelago, it was necessary to gather together all the existing information on the status of all vertebrate species, including birds There is much already known about the birds of Java and Bali and I have drawn extensively on published literature as well as on more up-to-date field lists and survey reports. For the basic information on Javan birds I am heavily indebted to the major work of Kuroda (1935, 1936) whose two volume com- pilation (in English) contains a wealth of detail, plus a review.

Synopsis

Each bird family is introduced by a short general account and a key to the family. These keys are based on those of Delacour's Birds of Malaysia (1947) adapted for the avifauna of the Javan province and to emphasize field character rather than measurements in the hand. Species order and English names follow those used in Birds of South East Asia by King et. al. (1975 For birds not listed in King's book I have given the most commonly used English names. Unconfirmed new additions to the Javan list are inserted after their nearest relative with the number affixed with the letter a. Each species has also been given an Indonesian name, whenever possible that most commonly used throughout Indonesia. Where no general Indonesian name exists I have taken I have taken the most widely used Javanese or Sudanese name. Species entries follow a standard format with a full description for each species, emphasizing key diagnostic characters.
