David Doty attended carnival glass auctions and conventions for several years before realizing that nobody was systematically recording the marvelous and unusual pieces of carnival to be found. In early 1993, he began photographing carnival wares at conventions and auctions. The growing stacks of photographs, together with the auction sales prices he had been cataloging in his computer database, gave Doty the raw material for a field guide such as this one. After investigating ways to share his knowledge with new collectors, he finally decided on doing a book. Doty's goal was something portable for collectors to carry with them, that included a great range of shapes for every carnival pattern. What resulted was a "gold mine" of a reference work on carnival and pattern glass.
