Interstingly, holes, depressions, and shelters used by animals provide an equally useful, but largely neglected, method of learning about the activities and habits of animals. This small guide, which includes over 60 illustrations of holes and the animals who use them, provides a first step toward using this field observation technique.

About the Author

Pinau Merlin has lived in the desert Southwest for 25 years and in wilderness areas for 14 years. Ms. Merlin leads natural history expeditions in the United States and Mexico, teaches tracking, designs wildlife habitat and nature trails, and writes on a variety of natural history topics.
