Add to basketFields of Sight is a unique collaboration between photographer Gauri Gill and renowned Warli artist Rajesh Vangad. The series began in early 2013 in Ganjad, Dahanu, an Adivasi village in coastal Maharashtra, India. A new visual language emerged symbiotically from Gill's initial experiences of photographing the landscape. Looking at her contact sheets, she perceived that although the camera was capturing the distinct 'chameleon-like' skin of the landscape, it was missing vital aspects of what was not apparent to the eye, yet was vividly relayed in the great mythical and experiential stories narrated to her by Vangad. The photographs by Gill, inscribed by drawings by Vangad, reconfigure the photographic site both formally as well as conceptually, to arrive at new documents of multiple truths and knowledge systems. In the act of viewing the landscape through the eyes of Vangad, Gill rekindles the need to challenge the way we see things today, what our eyes capture and what may elude them. 'As though one were photographing an old home, and the resident of the house came out, and began to speak'. In connection with Gauri Gill's ongoing exhibition at the Louisiana Museum, Humlebæk, Denmark, Gauril Gill will participate in two events in connection with her visit:On 29 March at 4 pm, the artist will join curator Tine Colstrup for a Walk and Talk in the exhibition, and on 30 March Gauri Gill will take part in a QandA session. For the QandA, Sonja Furu who is a Danish journalist based in New Dehli will talk to Gauri Gill about her books Acts of Appearance and Fields of Sight. Preceding their talk Sonja Furu will present a lecture at 7. 30 pm, on the topic of India today.

A formal and conceptual dialogue between art and photography, transforming the politics of landscape
A collaboration between Indian photographer Gauri Gill (born 1970) and Indigenous Warli artist Rajesh Vangad (born 1975), Fields of Sight features spare black-and-white landscape photos of the Indian countryside from Gill, overlaid with swirling, tribally inspired illustrations by Vangad. The series began in early 2013 in Ganjad, Dahanu, an Adivasi village in coastal Maharashtra, India. Looking at her contact sheets, Gill saw that although the camera was capturing this distinctive landscape, it was missing vital aspects that were vividly relayed in the mythical stories narrated to her by Vangad. The photographs by Gill, inscribed by drawings by Vangad, reconfigure the photographic site both formally and conceptually; in the act of viewing the landscape through the eyes of Vangad, Gill rekindles the need to challenge the limitations of our perspectives.
