Synopsis

YOU FIGHT FOR TREASURE, the story of Timothy Pinkham, a boy living in Nantucket just after the American Revolution, was written by Edouard Stackpole and first published in 1932. Stackpole, the late Dean of Nantucket historians, set this lad's story in the turmoil following the war when smugglers, pirates, privateers and the British Navy prowled the seas and made each voyage an exciting gamble. Timothry Pinkham is an island lad who conspires with seagoing comrades to rescue his father from the clutches of Algerian pirates. Some readers will have met Timothy in Stackpole's book SMUGGLER'S LUCK, first published the year before this one. It is set when the Revolution was still raging and Nantucket was torn between the cause of the American Patriots, who controlled relations between the island and the mainland, and the British, who patrolled the surrounding seas and showed no quarter toward any islanders who sided with Patriots. In this story a pirate treasure hidden on Nantucket, a trip to England and then beyond to the Mediterranean, a game of wits with the Barbary pirates and a perilous return to his beloved island are all part of young Timothy's danger-packed life.

About the Author

Edouard A. Stackpole (1903-93) is the author of a number of important works of Nantucket and maritime history, including THE SEA HUNTERS (1953) and WHALES AND DESTINY (1972). He was for many years the director of the Peter Foulger Museum of the Nantucket Historical Association and was curator of Mystic Seaport form 1952 until 1966. His writings for juvenile readers, in addition to SMUGGLER'S LUCK and YOU FIGHT FOR TREASURE, also include MADAGASCAR JACK, written in 1935.
