La Fille Du Regiment: Opera Comique in Due Atti / Opera Comique in Two Acts

Gaetano Donizetti's La Fille du Régiment is a critical edition vocal score for voice and piano, edited by Claudio Toscani. This French-language opera score is intended for singers, pianists, conductors, vocal coaches, educators, researchers, and opera enthusiasts using the work for rehearsal, musical study, coaching, or performance preparation.

The edition contains the vocal and piano material for the opera and draws on historical sources to address problems found in the principal 1840 printed score prepared by Paris publisher Georges Schonenberger. Because only limited autograph musical sources survive, the editor compared the transmitted text with additional sources, including manuscript scores of Donizetti's Italian version. Spoken dialogue absent from the printed musical sources was derived from the libretto used for the premiere.

This critical approach offers valuable context for exploring Donizetti's musical and theatrical intentions while providing a practical voice and piano format for rehearsal, musical study, coaching, and performance preparation. Of particular interest is the restoration of Tonio's Act Two romance Pour me rapprocher de Marie, which appeared in the original libretto and was performed at the premiere before Donizetti subsequently cut it.

The appendices also preserve two unpublished variants from autograph sources: an earlier Act Two duet for Marie and Tonio and a preliminary version of the Act Two Finale. Combining a historically informed critical text with a convenient vocal score format, this edition offers singers, pianists, conductors, teachers, researchers, and admirers of Donizetti a substantial resource for rehearsal, performance preparation, musical study, reference, or gifting to an opera and classical music enthusiast.
