Filterable Viruses (Paperback or Softback)

"Filterable Viruses" is a landmark scientific work edited by Thomas M. Rivers, a pioneer often regarded as the father of modern virology. This comprehensive volume serves as a foundational text in the study of sub-microscopic pathogens, providing a detailed examination of agents that pass through filters capable of retaining bacteria. Through a series of rigorous papers, the work explores the physical and chemical properties of these agents, their host specificity, and the clinical manifestations of the diseases they cause.

The text offers deep insights into early 20th-century research on conditions such as smallpox, rabies, and poliomyelitis, bridging the gap between classical microbiology and the then-emerging field of virology. By synthesizing experimental data and pathological observations, the work clarifies the unique nature of viruses as distinct biological entities rather than mere toxins or small bacteria. For medical historians, researchers, and students of life sciences, "Filterable Viruses" remains an essential reference that documents the transition toward our modern understanding of viral infection and public health. This work stands as a testament to the investigative spirit that paved the way for contemporary vaccine development and molecular biology.
