Fourth printing. Decorated red cloth. Slightest sunning at the spine, else fine lacking the dust jacket. The author's first book, one of the first wave of novels from the Harlem Renaissance, about a black medical doctor who returns to his Georgia home hoping to improve the lot of his fellows, only to be met with prejudice, suspicion, and violence. It deals in part with lynching, a practice against which White, in his capacity as the outspoken and longtime executive secretary of the NAACP, waged a long and ultimately successful campaign. A handsome copy of this early reprint.
