Thank you for considering Fire Girl. I want readers to know that 100% of my royalties from this book are donated to the Wildland Firefighter Foundation, which provides financial support to the families of wildland firefighters who are killed or injured in the line of duty.
I was one of the first few female firefighters to work for the California Department of Forestry. It was 1978, and there were only 26 women statewide working for CDF that year. We were stepping into entirely new territory. In fact, no woman had ever worked at my assigned Northern California CDF station in its 50-year history.
It was very much a man’s world, and not everyone was thrilled when an 18-year-old girl—standing 5'2" and weighing 95 pounds—showed up for duty.
From the everyday routines of station life to battling raging forest fires and facing near-death experiences, I tell my story exactly as I remember it, with honesty, humor, and heart. And yes—I definitely have a couple of good stories in there.
If you are a firefighter—past, present, or future—thank you for your invaluable service. If you are a family member of a firefighter, thank you for your unwavering support.
