Glenn "Fireball" Roberts was the first modern superstar of stock car racing. He was truly ahead of his time and already a legend in his late 20�s. Unfortunately, for the woman he loved and the racing community, his time ran out far too early.

Godwin Kelly became enamored with this story while working on a special feature story for the Daytona Beach News-Journal�s coverage of the 2004 July race. During the research, he discovered there was much more to Glenn Roberts than the "Fireball" persona the public saw.

About the Author

About the Author Godwin Kelly has spent most of his life in the Daytona Beach, Florida area but didn t become interested in racing until after he finished his college schooling. He went to work for the News-Journal newspaper in 1977 and covered his first stock car race two years later. His first assignment was a dilly: a report about the fight between Cale Yarborough and the Allison brothers following the 1979 Daytona 500. "The sport sucked me in on that cold February day," Kelly says. Kelly has been on the racing beat since 1982 winning several regional and national writing honors along the way, including two Russ Catlin Motorsports Awards and the prestigious Henry McClemore Award, for career achievement. Kelly makes his home in Palm Coast, just north of the racing city, with his wife Diane. They have three children.
