Firefighter Ray's Very Bad Day: Helping Kids Cope with Traumatic Events

Firefighter Ray’s Very Bad Day is a gentle, hopeful story that helps children understand and process scary experiences — and reminds them that it’s okay not to feel okay right away.

When a powerful tornado hits his town, Firefighter Ray rushes to help others, but afterward, he struggles with memories that won’t fade. With the help of a caring counselor, Ray learns simple grounding techniques — like deep breathing, noticing his surroundings, and saying “I’m okay” — to calm his body and mind.

Written by Mary Lujan, a Licensed Professional Counselor specializing in trauma recovery for first responders, this story introduces children to emotional regulation tools in a safe, comforting way.
Through realistic watercolor illustrations and a heartfelt message, young readers learn that bravery isn’t about never being afraid — it’s about finding peace, one breath at a time.
