Modern 1/4 leather. 40 pp., slightly chipped, short tears at foreedge of several leaves. The title page has a long mended vertical tear near the gutter. This bood does not contain the map, which was issued with only a few copies. The title page sets the price of this pamphlet at 25 cents, or 75 cents with the map. Clearly, most people did not want to pay triple the price to get the map. The colony was organized in 1870 as a utopian agricultural community with high moral standards by Nathan C. Meeker. Meeker, who had been a reporter and author, later became an Indian agent in Western Colorado and died (along with 10 of his employees) at the hands of the Ute Tribe in what became known as the Meeker Massacre. The Union Colony was later to be renamed "Greeley" after the editor of the New York Tribune, Horace Greeley. This is among the earliest histories of any Colorado town. Howes C608, Wynar 1474.
