The Chapter House is an independent bookstore in Albany, Oregon, operated by Logan Isaac, combat veteran (OIF/OEF, 25th Infantry Division), professed Hospitaller of St Martin, and award-winning author. We're a small operation with an outsized commitment to the kind of books that resist easy categorization?theology that doesn't pretend the world is tidy, history that doesn't sanitize the margins, literature that refuses to perform respectability.
Our inventory reflects the bookstore's roots in veteran advocacy and theological community. You'll find serious biblical scholarship alongside memoirs of war and exile, works of political theology next to poetry that knows what it costs to tell the truth. We stock books for readers who are done with gatekeepers and performance, who want substance over brand management, who recognize that the most important conversations happen in the spaces institutional authorities would rather ignore.
Logan holds advanced degrees from Duke Divinity School and the University of St Andrews, where he studied under Stanley Hauerwas and N.T. Wright. He leads Grunt Works (veteran advocacy and theological community), the Hospitallers of Saint Martin (a Christian religious order), and GI Justice (legal advocacy for service members and veterans). The Chapter House serves as physical space for these interconnected communities?a place where biblical languages, textual criticism, and military experience inform one another without apology.
We describe ourselves as maintaining the freedom to serve marginalized communities without institutional capture. If you're looking for books that treat readers as capable of complexity, if you're done with simplified narratives that protect comfortable assumptions, if you want to support an independent bookseller who believes the work matters more than the optics, you've found the right place.
Every purchase supports veteran community programming, theological enrichment outside traditional academic gatekeeping, and formal advocacy for those the system would rather silence. We ship promptly, describe condition honestly, and stand behind everything we sell.
