This book comprises nine chapters-covering files, utilities, vi, and the X Window System (among a few topics)-and three appendixes. Topham takes the scholastic approach in this UNIX introduction, with a page summary at the beginning of each chapter and a quiz at the end. Each chapter covers just enough UNIX to give the reader a sense of accomplishment and the confidence to forge ahead. Each quiz is reasonable, fitting the content of the chapter well and providing a gauge of your progress or lack of it. The steady but comfortable tempo makes this an excellent choice for those desiring organized but not overwhelming UNIX instruction, without a wealth of secret incantations or obscure historical detail.
