First book edition. 225 copies designed, handset, and printed by Lewis and Dorothy Allen. Prolegomenon by Carroll D. Hall. Small octavo. xvi, 44, [2]pp. Pen and ink drawings by Lawrence E. Walker. Calf-backed decorated boards. Spine very lightly rubbed, top of spine torn, but intact, edge of boards slightly darkened. Front and rear gutters browned as usual (leather offsetting).Front hinge just starting. Overall, a near fine copy. "Fourgeaud's newspaper article, reprinted here for the first time in book form, is important for including one of the earliest published accounts of the gold discovery" (Kurutz). [Allen: 2; Kurutz: 253].

Store description

The Argonaut Book Shop was founded in 1941 in the middle of the financial district of San Francisco. The Argonaut was a founding member of the Antiquarian Booksellers' Association of America and has been a member in good standing ever since. The Shop is now located just three blocks from Union Square in downtown San Francisco and is open six days a week. Parking facilities include ample street space and a parking garage close by. The bookstore occupies one large room open to the public. One will find antique bookcases filled with fine and rare books, mostly dealing with the history of California and the American West. One will also find fine press books and other rare subject matter. The shop also carried good books in varied subject areas including art, maritime, American civil war, books on antiques, literature, regional Americana, etc..…
