About the Author
Donald Macintyre was a 2006–07 Pantech Fellow at Shorenstein APARC. He was the Seoul bureau chief for Time 2001–2006. Daniel C. Sneider is the associate director for research at Shorenstein APARC.The former foreign affairs columnist of the San Jose Mercury News has also written for the New Republic, National Review, the Far Eastern Economic Review, Time, the International Herald Tribune, the Financial Times, the Dallas Morning News, and the Sacramento Bee. Gi-Wook Shin is the director of Shorenstein APARC; the founding director of the Korean Studies Program; senior fellow at the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies; and associate professor of sociology, all at Stanford University. Shin also coedits the Journal of Korean Studies.
Donald Macintyre was head of communications at Shinsei Bank in Tokyo until March 2009. He ran Time magazine’s Seoul bureau from 2001 to 2006, covering the nuclear crisis, general news, and the economies of North and South Korea. He has traveled to North Korea six times and made numerous trips to China’s border with North Korea to interview defectors, refugees, and traders. During 2006 he served as a senior adviser to the International Crisis Group on the North Korea refugee issue.
Daniel C. Sneider is a lecturer in international policy at Stanford's Ford Dorsey Master’s in International Policy and a lecturer in East Asian Studies at Stanford. His own research is focused on current U.S. foreign and national security policy in Asia and on the foreign policy of Japan and Korea. Since 2017, he has been based partly in Tokyo as a Visiting Researcher at the Canon Institute for Global Studies, where he is working on a diplomatic history of the creation and management of the U.S. security alliances with Japan and South Korea during the Cold War. Sneider contributes regularly to the leading Japanese publication Toyo Keizai as well as to the Nelson Report on Asia policy issues.
Gi-Wook Shin is the William J. Perry Professor of Contemporary Korea in Sociology; senior fellow at the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies; the director of the Walter H. Shorenstein Asia-Pacific Research Center since 2005; and the founding director of the Korea Program, all at Stanford University. As a historical-comparative and political sociologist, his research has concentrated on social movements, nationalism, development, democracy, and international relations.
