This book features stories of significant African American figures and those who made contributions to American society including Frederick Douglass, Harriet Tubman, and Sojourner Truth, as well as lesser-known figures who played important roles in their communities. The narratives were collected by Quaker abolitionist Abigail Mott and published under the orders of the estate of Quaker lawyer Lindley Murray. The stories provide a firsthand account of the experiences of African Americans during the 19th century, including slavery, the Civil War, and Reconstruction. The book also includes essays on the history of African American literature and the importance of preserving the stories of people of color. Cover has been rebound with new brown cloth and boards, but text and pages are original. Textblock is tight and neat, with minor foxing on some pages. Overall, in very good condition.
