James was found by his father who told the boy that the wound was fatal, and did he regret answering the alarm? James weakly said, "Father, hand me my powder horn and bullet pouch. I started with one pound of powder and forty balls, you see what I have left, you see what I have been about. I never did such a forenoon's work before. Tell mother not to mourn too much for me for I am not sorry I turned out. I die willingly for my country." Twenty-five year old James Hayward became one of forty-nine Americans killed that day.
Thousands of colonists turned out to oppose the British Army on April 19, 1775. Most of them had no military experience, yet they were willing to face the best trained army in the world. They saw themselves as patriots that were wronged by their mother country. "Americans! Forever bear in mind the BATTLE OF LEXINGTON where British Troops, unmolested and unprovoked wantonly, and in a most inhuman manner fired upon and killed a number of our countrymen, then robbed them of their provisions, ransacked, plundered and burnt their houses!"----Part of a newspaper article on May 3, 1775.
For several reasons this book is different from others written about the opening of the American Revolution. This story is a concise hour by hour account of what was happening during the first 24 hours of the American Revolution on the American and British sides. Numerous eyewitness accounts from both points of view are given on the day's events. Atrocities committed by both sides are exposed. The story of each town is told as they receive the news that, "The Redcoats are coming!"
