Substantial illustrated monograph devoted to the work of acclaimed Belgian illustrator and visual artist Klaas Verplancke. The First Klaas Book: Facing Realities presents approximately two hundred illustrations, drawings and paintings from the first two decades of Verplancke’s career and documents his development from children’s-book illustrator to an independent visual author with a distinctive artistic language. His work combines poetic imagination, surrealism, humour and an unusual ability to transform abstract ideas and universal emotions into memorable images. With text by Pieter van Oudheusden and an introduction by celebrated Dutch graphic artist Joost Swarte. The volume is presented in Dutch, English and French and is especially appealing to collectors of contemporary illustration, graphic art, visual storytelling and artist monographs. Verplancke achieved international recognition through major awards and nominations, including the Bologna Ragazzi Award and finalist recognition for the Hans Christian Andersen Award for Illustration. A beautifully produced object in its own right, notable for its cloth spine, varied papers, typography and high-quality colour reproduction. Originally issued with a documentary DVD of approximately 20 minutes on Verplancke’s working process. CONDITION DESCRIPTION Very Good. Attractive hardcover copy with cloth spine. Binding firm. Interior appears clean and well preserved. Covers show only light age-appropriate shelf and handling wear from the available photographs. He had learned his trade as a draughtsman at the Hoger Sint-Lucasinstituut in Ghent, where he studied Advertising Graphics and Photography from 1982 to 1986. After his military service, he worked for a few advertising agencies and continued to do his illustrating after office hours. In 1990, he decided to become a full-time illustrator. Advertising acted as a handy training ground for his new profession, teaching him to analyse issues and to get a story across to the public at large.
In the following years, he made countless contributions to publications and illustrated more or less a hundred and fifty books, ranging from strip cartoons for youngsters to the frank and fearless Erotisch Fabels. He also wrote and illustrated the strip cartoon books Nopjes en Reus and illustrated the acid satire of Reinaart de Vos and Tijl Uilenspiegel. In so doing he switched back and forth between styles with consummate ease, as well as techniques and materials, which he chose to suit each job and adjusted for the subject in hand. Although computers came to play a major role in developing his illustrations, the conventional drawing, using pencil or pen and paper, remained the cornerstone of his work.

Store description
Welcome to my carefully curated collection of second-hand, vintage and collectible books, based in Leuven, Belgium. I am a private bookseller and lifelong book lover with a particular interest in unusual, distinctive and hard-to-find titles. My collection is eclectic and includes literature, philosophy, history, art and design, film and cultural studies, science, psychology, travel, Belgian and European history, vintage editions, illustrated books and other specialist non-fiction. I particularly enjoy finding books that deserve to be rediscovered: overlooked editions, unusual publications, books on niche subjects and attractive older volumes that may be difficult to find in ordinary bookshops. Every book offered here is individually inspected. I aim to describe editions and condition carefully and honestly, including significant signs of age, wear, inscriptions, missing components or other imperfections whenever applicable. Photographs show the actual book whenever possible. Books are stored with care and securely packaged for shipping. I am happy to sell internationally and welcome collectors, researchers and readers from around the world. If you have a question about an edition, its condition, contents or additional photographs, please feel free to contact me through AbeBooks. Thank you for browsing my collection, and I hope you find a book here that has been waiting for exactly the right reader. A note about our shipping rates At The Second Chapter, we know that international shipping costs can sometimes seem high, particularly for destinations outside Belgium and neighbouring countries. We deliberately use reliable, traceable shipping with Track & Trace whenever possible. This is important for both you as the buyer and us as the bookseller: your order can be followed throughout its journey, and there is clear confirmation that the parcel has been delivered. Many of the books we offer are scarce, collectible, out-of-print or otherwise difficult to replace. For that reason, we prefer not to send valuable books using cheaper untracked postal services, where neither buyer nor seller can reliably determine what has happened if a parcel is delayed or lost. Our shipping charges therefore reflect the actual cost of secure postal shipment from Belgium (Bpost) rather than being used as an additional source of profit. We always package books carefully to protect them during their journey, and we aim to combine safe packaging, reliable delivery and transparent shipping costs. If you are interested in a book but feel that the quoted shipping cost to your country is unusually high, please feel free to contact us before ordering. Where the book’s weight, dimensions, value and destination allow it, we will gladly check whether a less expensive reliable shipping option is available. Thank you for supporting The Second Chapter and for giving pre-loved books another chapter in their story.…
