Add to basketELEANOR ROOSEVELT (1884-1962) was a diplomat, activist and the longest serving and most influential First Lady of the United States, holding the post from March 1933 to April 1945. She advocated for expanded roles for women in the workplace, the civil rights of African Americans and Asian Americans ant the rights of World War II refugees. President Truman later called her "the First Lady of the World" in tribute to her human rights achievements. One page, 5 ¾ x 6 ¾, TLS, December 3, 1953, on Val-Kill Cottage, Hyde Park, Dutchess County, New York, letterhead, to Mr. Haugan. "Thank you so much for sending to me a copy of your 1953 Christmas. I am delighted to have it and look forward to enjoying it as I have other editions in the past. "Very sincerely yours, "Eleanor Roosevelt" Mrs. Roosevelt was writing to Randolph Edgar Haugan, who was born in Martell, Pierce County, Wisconsin, to immigrant parents from Norway. Haugan was knighted by King Haakon VII of Norway during World War II for his service to American Relief for Norway. His Christmas: An American Annual of Christmas Literature and Art was initiated in 1931. He sent copies to several presidents and first ladies.
