First Lessons in Algebra: In Which the Elements of the Science Are Familiarly Explained (Classic Reprint)

Start here: a clear, beginner-friendly path into algebra.

This straightforward primer introduces the building blocks of algebra using simple symbols, concrete examples, and careful explanations. It aims to help a student move from arithmetic to abstract problem solving with confidence.

Originally published in the 1800s, this edition presents core ideas such as defining symbols, understanding plus and minus, and the basics of equations and unknown quantities. It emphasizes gradual progress, plenty of practice, and a practical approach that keeps the focus on real problem solving rather than abstract theory. The book builds toward topics like simple and two-variable equations, proportion, progression, and introductory geometric-series concepts, all with step-by-step worked examples.

• Foundational concepts explained in accessible language for learners new to algebra
• Step-by-step rules for operations, equations, and solving for unknowns
• Progressive exercises and numerous worked examples to reinforce understanding
• Introductory coverage of proportion, progression, and geometric sequences

Ideal for curious students and anyone seeking a solid introduction to algebraic thinking, this edition supports independent study or classroom use as a companion to early mathematics learning.
