Ex-library. A rather scarce Illustrated Modern Library edition of the classic novel by Miguel de Cervantes, said to be the first modern European novel. Includes the sometimes alarming, always whimsical illustrations of Salvador Dali, including 10 two-page color pictures and numerous black & white drawings. Translated from the Spanish by Peter Motteux. --- In red-orange paper-covered boards backed in black cloth, with color Dali illustration to front cover, gilt-stamped spine titling; dark topstain. Volume lacks the acetate wrapper or slipcase. --- Evidence of former ownership by American Jewish Universiy Library limited to bookplate at front paste-down, transparent tape remnants to covers and a couple of rubberstampings. Also with chafing to cover edges, else a well-preserved, tightly-bound copy. (NOTE: The book lacks deacession statement from the library, but a printed email confirming deaccession is laid in.); Ex-Library; 12mo - 7 to 7-1/2 in. tall; xviii, 587 pages.
