First Principles of Chemical Philosophy

First Principles Of Chemical Philosophy by Josiah P. Cooke. This work presents a deductive, theory-driven framework for modern chemistry designed for college instruction. The text integrates inorganic and organic chemistry through valence concepts, atomic-weight reasoning, and graphical or radical notation to illuminate constitution and transformations. It emphasizes measurement, stoichiometry, and interpretation of chemical types, isomorphism, and reactions, and adopts a problem-centered approach with solutions and guided steps. Topics span alcohols and derivatives, ethers and hydrolysis, aldehydes and ketones, vinyl and allylic alcohols, acrylic and lactic acids, glycols and oxidation products, ethylenic oxide and glyceryl chemistry, glycerine and triglycerides, and multivalent carbon skeletons including tartaric and citric acids. The volume also covers glycol-derived acids, glucosides, fermentation, and a methodological emphasis on graphical symbolism and isomerism, linking inorganic oxide/salt chemistry with organic frameworks. Appendices provide questions and problems to practice atomic weights, reactions, and isomerism, reinforcing atomistic reasoning and reaction networks.
