The First Room

The room you are about to read about was not built by anyone with authority.

It was built by a nine-year-old boy who drew architectural plans before he knew the word, by an aunt who arrived at school before the building opened, and by welfare officer Elena Kanda, who began, at 06:18 on a Tuesday in October, to understand that the language her city used to protect its most vulnerable children was the primary instrument of their harm.

Revised. That was the word in the subject line. Not the memo header. Not the case number. Just that one word, and her body already knew what it meant.

The First Room is a literary novel set in contemporary Tokyo. Over twenty-two chapters, welfare officer Elena Kanda discovers that a nine-year-old boy has built something the city does not have a form for — and learns what it will cost her to protect it.

Precise and cold in observation. Devastating in restraint. For readers of Kazuo Ishiguro, Margaret Atwood, and Sally Rooney.

The governing laws:
The room gets to say no first.
The record is longer than the forms.
Certainty has a sound. If the child can hear it, it becomes a wall.

A. J. Vale worked for more than a decade in welfare and education in Japan. The Room Series is a debut.
