About this Item
Blue cloth; xii, 276pp; illustrations & a map; index. This is Number 4 in the series Northwestern University Studies in the Social Sciences. The book is the account of both Robert Kennicott and Henry M. Bannister in their explorations of Russian America and their influence on the 1867 Treaty between the US and Russia and the later acquisition by purchase of Alaska. The book centers around the information contained in the journals of Kennicott (1859-1862) and Bannister (1865-1866), both of which are included in the book. Kennicott's journal is full of his observations of the geography, natural resources and climate of Alaska, as well as its native peoples. Both men were working under the auspices of the Smithsonian. Fascinating accounts of these two, relatively unknown, expedition leaders and their influence in the eventual acquisition of Alaska from Russia. The book is in Near Fine condition; clean and bright throughout, with only a couple of lightly penciled notes in the margin of several pages of the text. [XWAX]. Seller Inventory # 000163
