Kindergarten-Grade 3-- A collection of objects from the Musee National des Arts et Traditions Populaires in Paris, photographed and arranged according to perceived geometric shape. Included are agricultural, culinary, decorative, and religious items from the Iron Age to the present, e.g., the heart is illustrated by a silver brooch from the 18th century; the wave by a detail of patterned wallpaper from the 19th century. The word for each shape--square, pinwheel, oval--is given in English, French, Spanish, German, and Italian. There is a pronunciation key for each language and an identification guide for each object. A brief two-page introduction to the concept of shapes is also included, but whether it is for young readers or for adults sharing the book with children is unclear. Full of interesting objects beautifully photographed in full color, the work suffers from lack of focus regarding both intended audience and purpose.
