The First Shift: A Shackleton Base Story - Hub Era

Six days ago, Alex didn't know anyone at Shackleton Base. Now there's a whole system running differently because of one question he asked.

The lunar base Alex's family just relocated to looks nothing like the quiet research outpost in the old photos. Humanoid robots work construction alongside human crews. AI-coordinated printers turn moon dust into buildings in real time. Production targets climb every quarter - and somewhere along the way, the human review time built into all that automation has been quietly shrinking, one small cut at a time, with nobody noticing except the kid who just got here.

Mira Okafor has spent two years earning trust at Shackleton. She knows better than anyone how easy it is to stop seeing the thing you walk past every day. When Alex's question turns into a near-miss that almost hurts someone she knows, Mira, Alex, and the rest of the crew have to do more than sound an alarm - they have to prove, with real numbers and a real fix, that a company chasing production targets should still make room to slow down.

Nobody's the villain here. That's what makes it hard.

Grounded in real research on lunar manufacturing, humanoid robotics, and how organizations decide how much to trust their own automated systems, The First Shift opens a new chapter in the Shackleton Base series - same base, same rigor, a crew that's grown, and a question every reader will recognize: how do you know something's actually fine, instead of just being told it is?
