First Steps in English Literature

First Steps In English Literature by Arthur Gilman is a concise, teacher-friendly introduction to the history and reading of English letters. The volume surveys the development of English language and literature from its early origins in Old English through the four mature periods, introducing key terms, languages, and national influences. It blends historical narrative with practical guidance for learners and teachers, outlining two broad periods: Immature English and Mature English, subdivided into Original English, Broken English, Dead English, Reviving English; and later periods such as the Italian, Puritan, French, and Romantic influences. The book profiles major authors and works—Beowulf, Layamon, Chaucer, Wyclif, Malory, More, Shakespeare, Milton, Bunyan, Dryden, Addison, Johnson, Swift, Scott, Wordsworth, Coleridge, and many others—while stressing how language change and cross-cultural contact shaped English literature. Structural features include prefatory remarks, chapters, a Periods chart, definitions of terms, notes on pronunciation, and a bibliography, all designed to encourage independent study and library reading. Its aim is to spark love of literature and to guide beginners toward a thorough, lifelong engagement with English literary heritage.
