Newspaper advertisement with a large profile portrait of Belva Lockwood, for Peruna Medicine Co., 1900. Advertisement measures: 8.25 x 4.5 in. Lockwood was the first woman to run for U.S. President in 1884 and 1888 as part of the National Equal Rights Party. In the advertisement, she is described as being "the best known woman in America" and "the pioneer of her sex in the legal profession." In addition to her work with women s voting rights, she was also one of the first female attorneys in the country and the first woman to argue a case before the U.S. Supreme Court. Good condition with clear image and text. Newspaper sheet is folded with tears along creases. Expected age-related toning. Small chips, tears, and losses along all edges. Unique piece of ephemera shows the widespread influence of one of America s earliest women lawyers and equal rights activists. Comes with 5 x 3 in. Belva Lockwood engraving from 1884.
