Fish is a twelve-year-old boy from a poor farming family who loves to swim and hates to fight. After taking a job as a courier for his uncle, Fish is waylaid by pirates, who steal a precious purse of golden coins. He follows the thieves onto their ship, the Scurvy Mistress, and soon learns that the coins are the key to locating a legendary treasure. As he works to earn the trust of Cobb, the captain of the Scurvy Mistress, Fish struggles to survive among the band of wild, often violent pirates. Eventually Fish and his new friends uncover a planned mutiny headed by a nasty, greedy pirate known as Scab, and they're left to thwart his dastardly plan and hunt down the treasure on their own.
"Perfect for young readers, even better for reading aloud at bed-time, thanks to the plentiful cliff hangers." - Cory Doctorow
"Mone seamlessly integrates factual information into his tale of friendship, loyalty, and exploration. As Fish travels from farm to city to ship, he discovers his place in the world, and his moral compass helps to ground and direct the story. His decision not to engage in fighting and his efforts to stop the mutiny will provide points for group discussion. Fish makes a splashing good addition to adventure fiction." - School Library Journal
" The humorous and slightly postmodern tint of the story is evident in the subspecies of grizzled rascals packed onto the ship, like the Scalawags of Sausage (cured-meat enthusiasts). Is it possible to have too many solid pirate yarns? Although this one doesn’t map out much new territory, it’s a good one to crowd onboard." - Booklist
