The Five-Minute Mysteries Reader is a pleasant surprise. The book actually brings together two of Ken Weber's books in one volume: Further Five-Minute Mysteries and Even More Five-Minute Mysteries. As with the previous installments, the double edition features a number of short puzzles (76 in this volume) with the answers supplied at the end. Some of the answers rely on a bit of extrapolation from the story, but many of them are satisfying logic puzzles that demand a strong grounding in the real world (e.g., Would a witness have been able to see the murder if he were mowing the lawn when and where he said he was?). The surprise, for readers new to Weber's books, is that each mystery is crafted with a rich set of characters and a well-tempered narrative wit that quickly sets Weber's volumes apart from other, similar collections. One has the feeling of coming into a small slice of reality just as a major event is about to happen. For example, in mystery number 18, "Tracing the Couriers from Departure to Arrival," readers are thrown in medias res into an international Drug Enforcement Administration investigation; or in number 51, "The Case of the Broken Lawnmower," the story drops in on a conversation between a mother-daughter team of homicide detectives who are standing in a suburban yard. The Five- Minute Mysteries Reader is a perfect gift for a fan of puzzles or mysteries, and it would make an excellent resource for a party game--or even a quiet night at home. --Patrick O'Kelley
